Next year marks the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural speech,one of the masterpieces of delivered prose in American history. Four years into a devastating civil war, Lincoln closed his speech stating, “let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.” These words forever changed how our nation treats those who serve.
It is a great honor for me, in conjunction with the Friars Foundation – the charitable arm of the legendary Friars Club – to announce the creation of the Lincoln Awards: A Concert for Veterans & the Military Family. In 2015, these prestigious awards will recognize outstanding achievement and excellence in providing opportunities and support to our nation’s veterans and military families.
Whether it is outstanding achievement and excellence by a veteran, a public servant, a private citizen or a caregiver; a researcher whose works improve the lives of those that serve; an entertainer using their talents to lend support; organizations, both non-profit and corporate, providing opportunities and services; or a standard bearer, a lifetime example of service to veterans, we want to recognize the best.
In order to ensure that we recognize those most worthy I am asking for your help. As an 11 year Army veteran, I know that veterans and those that serve them possess an inherent ethos of humility. Please nominate those individuals or organizations that have inspired you, touched you and reconfirmed your belief in the power of compassion for others on a daily basis.
Our prestigious Selection Committee will select one person or organization in each category to salute their efforts with the prestigious Lincoln Award. The Award will be presented to them at a special ceremony in an exclusive Washington D.C. location followed by a world-class concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
