Professor J. Michael Haynie
Dr. Mike Haynie serves as the Executive Director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, and also the Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management. Mike completed his PhD in Entrepreneurship and Business Strategy at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and his research is focused on social innovation, decision-making, self-identity, and cognition. Dr. Haynie’s research has been published in many of the world’s leading academic journals, and is widely cited in the popular press. Before beginning his academic career, Haynie served for 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
In 2011, Haynie developed and enacted a plan to launch higher-education’s first interdisciplinary institute focused on the social, economic, and policy concerns of the nation’s veterans and military families. Today the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University is widely acknowledged as the national hub of both thought leadership and actionable programming, positioned to address the post-service life course concerns of the nation’s 22 million veterans and families.
Dr. Haynie is also a widely sought after speaker on issues related to entrepreneurship, veterans, and people with disabilities. His work empowering veterans through entrepreneurship has been featured nationally on 60 Minutes, the ABC Evening News, MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, Fox News, and also in the New York Times, LA Times, INC Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Entrepreneur Magazine. Dr. Haynie is currently the chairman of the U.S. Secretary of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Veterans’ Employment, Training, and Employer Outreach, appointed to that role in 2014 by Labor Secretary Thomas E. Perez. Mike also serves on the external advisory committee of the Center for Integrated Healthcare at the Syracuse Regional Veterans Medical Center, on U.S. Senator Kirstin Gillibrand’s veterans’ advisory working-group, and as an appointed member of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s New York State Council on Returning Veterans and Their Families. In addition, Mike serves as an invited member of the Classy Awards Leadership Council, and also on the external advisory committee for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Veterans Coming Home project.
